Volunteers Needed for Divide Gold Rush Days

12565395_1318279461531876_1879409665126475343_nDivide Gold Rush Days still needs docents and reenactors for encampments! If you’ve never been there, it’s a beautiful spot for living history (and history-history) located in Georgetown, Ca. Even if you can’t go, please help out and spread the word to get a great turn out. Also, if you know of any vendors of hand-crafted items, please pass this along. The cost is only $45.00 for 2 days to be a vendor.

Impressions: You might be thinking, “Why are they soliciting Civil War reenactors for a California Gold Rush event? While impressions are ideally of the pre-CW era, keep in mind you would have found many a wandering soldier in the gold fields.

Desertion to the gold field left San Francisco bay full of unmanned ships, and military installations were also nearly wiped out. Why? Money. A man could earn more in a day at the mines than in a month as a soldier.

Need proof?

Ask our good friend General Sherman about it. He complained in his must-read memoirs that the “pursuits of deserters had to be composed wholly of officers because the enlisted men were more apt to join the deserters.”
